History of Boca Raton
Boca Raton was originally a Native American settlement. The Tequesta tribe held the lands until a number of Spanish explorers arrived. After long periods when no one lived in the area, Captain Thomas Moore Rickards arrived in 1895 and built a home. Others later moved to the area following the Florida East Coast Railway expansion.
During the 1920s, a land boom brought even more people to Boca Raton and it became something of a resort town. This is when the architect Addison Mizner arrived. Mizner began working on a number of projects, including the Ritz-Carlton Cloister Inn, the Administrative Building, and several other buildings. His distinct Spanish Colonial Revival and Mediterranean Revival styles influenced many of the other buildings and homes in Boca Raton.
